The Moon will play a critical role in our further exploration of the
solar system. Recent, current, and planned lunar missions are unlocking
the Moon's unique record of early Earth-Moon system and the solar system
history and revealing its rich array of resources. The Moon may serve as
a test bed for human and robotic exploration technology, space resource
utilization strategies, and remote astronomical observatories. While
the future of lunar science and exploration is highly exciting, the
public's interest and understanding is lackluster and riveted in the
Apollo missions of the past. A vision and strategy that parallels
planned lunar exploration is needed for educating the public about the
Moon. What do students, teachers, and the public need to know about
lunar science and exploration? What is the current state-of-practice
with respect to lunar science, technology, and engineering education?
What are new areas for educational emphasis in informal educational and
outreach venues, K-12 classrooms, and higher education? This
presentation is intended to spark conversations within the lunar
community that will help to forge a vision and strategy for lunar
education.
